Companies invited to take action on human rights reporting

The United Nations Global Compact, Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative and the Global Reporting Initiative are marking the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights by calling on companies to make a commitment to improve at least one aspect of their human rights reporting.  The invitation to companies to participate is central to the three organizations’ new collaborative project: “Human rights – A call to action” which aims to foster greater integration of human rights principles into corporate sustainability reporting. Ultimately, the project aims to significantly improve companies’ understanding of how and why to publicly disclose policies and practice relating to human rights.

Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Global Compact Board member and President of Realizing Rights said: “The 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration during 2008 presents a key opportunity for the many companies who still haven’t thought seriously about the role of human rights in their business operations to do so, including by making human rights an integral part of their public reporting on sustainability issues.”

Human Rights, Content and Materiality - Be part of the unique GRI Working Group process

GRI is calling for interested individuals to indicate their interest in sitting on one of two new Working Groups: one is focused on Human Rights Reporting, the other on Content and Materiality.  The focus of the Human Rights Working Group is the formulation of recommendations on the further development of GRI guidance on human rights reporting and the associated indicators. The Content and Materiality Working Group will be tasked with formulating a protocol defining how to use the four principles for defining report content (materiality / stakeholder inclusiveness / sustainability context, and completeness) to select the material issues and indicators for a sustainability report. The outcomes of these Working Groups will contribute to the further development of the G3 Guidelines and are expected to be ready in 2009.

The Terms of Reference for the Working Groups will be available from 1 September 2008.  The first Working Group meetings will be held in the fourth quarter of 2008. If you are interested in applying for a position on either Working Group, or would like some more information, click here.
