Biographies of contributing photographers


Simba Russeau

Simba Russeau is a multimedia storyteller currently based in Beirut, Lebanon. Influenced by the reality of surviving 7 years, as a youth, on the streets, she taught herself photography.

 

Since 2002, Simba has covered assignments throughout Asia, Haiti, the US and Lebanon. Simba’s work, as a photographer and writer, has been published in several magazines and newspapers and on various websites. Currently she is working on photo essays documenting displaced faces around the world, foreign migrant workers and women in the Arab World.

Roberta Valerio

Roberta Valerio is an Italian born photographer who has been based in Paris since 1998. She worked for one year as black and white printer in Magnum Photos Agency. An independent photographer since 2001, her work is published regularly in the Italian, French and international press. For as long as she remembers she has been drawn by the subject of injustice and is interested in all shapes of resistance. Roberta has been recognised in various international photography awards.

Chris Jordan

 

Chris Jordan is an internationally acclaimed photographic artist and activist whose work explores the detritus of American mass culture. Chris’s work is exhibited widely in the US and Europe, and has been featured in magazines, newspapers, weblogs, documentary films and television programs all over the globe. He lives in Seattle with his wife the poet, Victoria Sloan Jordan, and his son.

Pep Bonet

 

Pep Bonet was born in Spain in 1974. His work focuses on African issues and long-term projects. His work on social issues such as HIV/Aids has led to two photography books and 35 exhibitions worldwide. His most known work is Faith and Chaos, an ongoing photo essay on the aftermath of the war in Sierra Leone. He was the 2005 winner of the Eugene Smith Humanistic Grant, in addition to other international grants and prizes. Pep lives in Mallorcam and is represented by Noor.

Jan-Joseph Stok

 

Born in Tilburg, the Netherlands in 1978, Jan-Joseph Stok spent most of his childhood in France. At the age of 18 he returned to his home country to study photojournalism at the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam.  Stok has completed freelance assignments for international magazines and newspapers and has traveled regularly to Africa to work for a variety of international NGO’s.

 

In January 2006, Stok was awarded “Best Photojournalist Under 30 of the Year” in the Netherlands at the Zilveren Camera. In 2006, Stok was based in London for one year, where he worked as a freelance photographer and completed a Masters in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication. These days, Stok spends most of his time abroad on assignments in Africa for international NGO’s, Newspapers and magazines, traveling regularly to the Democratic Republic of Congo and to other African nations.

Danfung Dennis

 

Danfung Dennis, 26, is a freelance photojournalist from Ithaca, N.Y.

He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Applied Economics in 2004, and began his career as a photojournalist by stringing for The Associated Press in Beijing. He is now based in London and is represented by World Picture Network. His work has appeared in Newsweek, TIME, The New York Times, The Sunday Times, The International Herald Tribune, The Washington Post, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Sunday Times Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Le Figaro Magazine, L'Express, Der Spiegel, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal.

John Brown

 

John Brown is a freelance photojournalist currently based in Cambodia. A former electronic/print marketing executive in the travel industry, John decided to pursue a career as a photojournalist after witnessing the living conditions of some of the residents of Southeast Asia.

 

His work as been web and print published by such various entities as Big Wiezy Productions, The World Bank, The Lincoln Library and the Arup Corporation, and has been exhibited in a variety of venues including The Toronto Press Club and the 2007 Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, Virginia. He continues to document issues he feels are important including health, the environment, social rights and poverty, and has recently completed work in conjunction with www.changingideas.org

Katharina Mouratidi

 

Katharina Mouratidi lives and works as a freelance photojournalist in Berlin Germany. She has a master’s degree in fine arts and visual communications. She has won many awards including the Alternative Media Prize 2007 in Germany. Geert Schuite

 

Geert Schuite is a serious amateur photographer, and a professional consultant, working with Triodos Facet in the field of triple bottom line management for small and medium sized companies and microfinance institutions. He supports these companies with the implementation of (GRI) reporting, capacity building and training.

 

In recent years he has undertaken short term missions to various countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. During these Schuite has used his photos in workshops to create awareness and discussion around the issue of the risks and opportunities for small companies when managing their triple bottom line.

James Wasserman

 

James Wasserman is a freelance photojournalist and editorial photographer currently living in Beijing, China. Having moved to China in early 2007, he is awed and inspired to be documenting issues in a country that is changing so rapidly and faces such huge challenges.

 

Wasserman has worked for editorial clients like Newsweek, The New York Times, Inc., Espn, Geo and Novel Observateur.  In addition to magazine work his work for the non profit sector includes, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The American Friends Service Committee, The Philadelphia Folklore Project, The Open Society Institute and the community outreach programs of Target and Nike.

Vincenzo D’Alto

Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Vincenzo D’Alto’s career as a professional photographer began in 2000.  His body of work is not limited to photojournalism. It also includes personal photographic projects and essays on a variety of subjects, including several that expose the daily socio-cultural issues experienced by everyday people living in different realities and conditions, locally and abroad.

In early 2001 Vincenzo became part of the regular rotation of staff photographers and worked in collaboration with reporters on stories for the Montreal Gazette, where he continues to work as a freelance photographer.  Vincenzo’s photographs continue to appear in several daily and monthly publications, nationally and internationally.

Prior to working as a full time photographer, Vincenzo explored his interest in Latin and Spanish cultures and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Hispanic Studies from Concordia University.  His knowledge of Spanish and Hispanic issues resulted in him working in several Spanish speaking countries including Nicaragua

Ana Elisa Fuentes

 

Ana Elisa Fuentes is a freelance photographer of Native American and Mexican descent, now based in Bavaria Germany. Using her camera as a platform for social commentary and catalyst for change, her lens has opened humanitarian windows into the cultures, landscapes, and vistas of California, Tibet, Europe, Central American and the Caribbean. Her works have been published in the New York Times, viewed in the New York and Geneva exhibition halls at the United Nations, and maintained in philanthropic, scholarly, and personal archives - including those of the XIV Dalai Lama, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, and Direct Relief International. She is a keen advocate for the use of biofuels.
