G3 is ready for use

Building on the cumulative experience of the world’s reporting community, the so-called “third generation” (G3) Guidelines are here! Representing the input of many thousands of practitioners - from sectors all around the world - over the past two years, the launch of the Guidelines also follows many months of eager anticipation.

Enhanced features of the G3 Guidelines include:

  • Strong emphasis on Reporting Principles as the foundation for all reporting processes
  • New section on Strategy and Analysis
  • The Disclosure on Management Approach (DMA): A consolidated area for narrative discussion on management approaches.
  • Consolidated, focused indicators. The overall number of indicators has gone from 97 (2002 Guidelines) to 79.
  • Indicator Protocols: Guidance on how to respond to indicators, definitions of key terms, and more.
  • Introduction of Application Levels, which replace the 2002-based In Accordance system.
  • Find out more about G3.

The G3 replace the 2002 Guidelines. Fear not - the transition to G3 is catered for. GRI will continue to recognize 2002-based reports for two full reporting cycles, including full In Accordance status.

After the years of input into G3 creation, the official launch last month was something of a celebration. Featured as part of the GRI and City of Amsterdam’s recent successful conference, the launch brought together hundreds of those who had volunteered their time and commitment to ensuring sustainability reporting is a relevant and mainstream part of good business management.

Our greatest of thanks to all who contributed to the G3 development and launch. We hope you enjoyed the process and the celebrations – and that you continue to find value in the Guidelines through your reporting.
