Podcast: What is XBRL, anyway?

The latest addition to the podcast library features Sean Gilbert (Technical Director) talking to Debbie Dickinson (Communications Coordinator) about the basics of XBRL, who will find it useful, and XBRL’s potential for streamlining the communication of sustainability information.

eXensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) is a method used to “tag” data (similar to html tags). It has a proven legacy in financial reporting but until the GRI partnered with PwC to create the taxonomy it had not been applied to sustainability reports.

Sustainability reports are produced in so many different formats – hardcopy, web based, PDFs and others – that it is sometimes hard to immediately find the data you’re looking for. Common application of the XBRL taxonomy will change this and means information can quickly and effortlessly be exchanged.

The podcast joins Alyson Slater’s briefing on the G3, plus a host of others from inspirational figures in the sustainability community: Al Gore, Sir Mark Moody Stuart and others.

Great for travelling or long commutes, the podcasts are easily downloaded and can be played on MP3 players and on most computers.
