In partnership with Accountability, GRI organized a successful side event at the IADB conference in Guatemala in mid December. The session called “Responsible Competitiveness: Supporting SMEs in Latin American Value Chains” focused on how to build responsible competitiveness through working with SMEs in South America, especially those in the global value chain, to benefit the majority.
Moderated by Alex McGillivray (AccountAbility), the four speakers; Leontien Plugge (GRI), Cristian Copaja (Forum Empresa), Elfid Torres (Fundes) and Robert de Jongh (SNV), addressed questions such as what are the needs of SMEs? How can big businesses engage and communicate with SMEs more effectively? And can reporting and standards play a role?
The end result was a clear view on the needs, drivers and opportunities for SMEs to increase responsible competitiveness through transparency and accountability in the region.
