GRI urges more companies and authorities to report on greenhouse gas emissions on World Environment Day

On World Environment Day, 5 June 2008, GRI called on companies, governments and NGOs to report publicly on their sustainability performance and include details on their greenhouse gas emissions.

United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) World Environment Day 2008 had the slogan: Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy. Climate change caused by human activity is a defining issue of our era, and UNEP asked countries, companies and communities to measure their greenhouse gas emissions and to reduce them.

GRI’s G3 Guidelines are an important tool in doing this as the Guidelines sets out how to measure and report on economic, environmental, and social performance, including climate change, in a consistent and comparable way.

Jacqueline Aloisi de Larderel, former Assistant Executive Director at United Nations Environmental Programme and member of the GRI Board of Directors said: “It is fitting that World Environment Day should focus on climate change.  It is crucial that all - and in particular the greatest emitters - monitor their green house gases emissions and their progress in reducing them using GRI Guidelines. The first step in responding to the climate change challenge is reporting!”
