About the Project

GRI supported by Netherlands Airports Consultants (NACO) is working with airports and their stakeholders to create sector specific commentary on the G3 Guidelines and additional airport sector specific performance indicators. This guidance for airports, which will be integrated into the GRI sustainability reporting framework, is being developed by an international, multi-stakeholder Working Group using a consensus seeking process. The airport operators and stakeholder organizations represented on the Working Group include:

Athens International Airport S.A., ASUR Mexico, Denver International Airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, Munich Airport, Fraport AG, Port of Portland, San Diego Airport, Toronto International Airport and Unique (Zurich Airport Inc); Adecon-Citizen Protection Association, Air Initiative for Asian Cities, Aviation Environment Federation, Bundesvereinigung gegen Fluglärm, Centre for Science and Environment Clean, Dexia Asset Management, SEIU Local 2006, Swedish Transport Workers Union and UNEP.

Why produce a Sector Supplement for the Airports Sector?

As air traffic increases each year, getting people to and from their respective destinations while keeping sustainability impacts low presents a major challenge for airports around the globe but one that is foremost on their radar screens.  Environmental impacts such as waste disposal, water usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity, along with social impacts such as job safety and working hours, impacts on local communities and neighborhoods, and customer privacy will escalate due to the high volume traffic.

At the same time, stakeholders such as industry associations, journalists, airline companies, local authorities, investors, and passengers are no longer content to stand by - they are demanding greater transparency on sustainability issues that impact their lives and businesses.

Background

Sustainability reports based on the GRI sector specific reporting guidelines will be a time and cost efficient tool for airports to keep ahead of increasing demands of stakeholders for transparency and accountability. It will comprise voluntary and flexible global guidelines on which to base sustainability reporting.
