The GRI G3 Guidelines are already being used by many organizations, including many apparel and footwear companies to promote transparency and accountability. Yet, apparel and footwear companies have unique needs for sustainability reporting, above and beyond those addressed by the existing G3 Guidelines.
Current Project Status
The Apparel and footwear sector supplement is currently being developed. Like all sector supplements, it is designed to be used in conjunction with the Guidelines.

About the project
Based on discussions with leading companies in the sector in 2005, GRI identified the apparel and footwear sector as a priority area needing sector-specific guidance to complement the GRI guidelines.
Background
The pilot version of the GRI Apparel and Footwear Sector Supplement has been in development since September 2005. A group of 20 expert practitioners from diverse geographies worked together in a consensus-seeking process to research and draft the Apparel and Footwear Sector Supplement. The group included representatives from the apparel and footwear companies together with report information user groups such as civil society organizations, labor organizations, investors, and rating agencies. The working group was co-chaired by one industry and one non-industry representative.
Development process
In 2005 a Working Group was formed to develop sector-specific guidance for the Apparel and Footwear Sector. The group worked together to develop a draft of the Sector Supplement that would then be piloted by reporting organizations in the sector.
The draft pilot Supplement was released for a public comment period of 90 days, from May until September 2006, during which time all interested parties were invited to submit their feedback on the draft.
After the public comment period, the working group met for a final time to discuss feedback and incorporate changes into the adjusted draft. The group then submitted the draft Supplement to the GRI Technical Advisory Committee who reviewed it on the basis of technical quality and evaluated the due process followed during its development. The pilot version is available from this webpage.
There is currently no active Working Group for this Sector Supplement.
