Current Project Status
GRI is working with construction and real estate companies and their stakeholders to create sector specific commentary on the G3 Guidelines and additional construction and real estate sector specific performance indicators. This guidance for the construction and real estate sector, which will be integrated into the GRI sustainability reporting framework, is being developed by an international, multi-stakeholder Working Group using a consensus seeking process. The construction and real estate companies and stakeholder organizations represented on the Working Group include:
Alstria REIT-AG, Arup, British Property Federation, Cebu Holdings, Citycon, Essar Investments, Hermes, Hindustan Construction Company Limited, Landcom, Lend Lease, Oxford Properties Group, ProLogis, REALPac and UK Green Building Council; APG All Pensions Group, Bloomberg, Building and Wood Workers’ International, Centre for Science and Environment New Dehli, CERES, Engineers against Poverty, ILO, The Energy and Resource Institute, UNEP, University of Arizona and University of Melbourne.
The first Working Group meeting was held in London on 1 and 2 October 2009, whereby key sustainability issues for the construction and real estate sector were identified and selected. The second meeting took place in Shanghai, China on 19 and 20 January 2010, where the members were cross referencing these issues with existing G3 Guidelines to identify where a sector specific commentary is needed or where a new indicator is required for the Sector Supplement.
Workshops
A series of multi-stakeholder workshops were taking place to discuss the range of issues for inclusion in a Construction and Real Estate Sector Supplement. These workshops intended to provide participants with an introduction to the Sector Supplement development process; facilitate stakeholder dialogue on the key sustainability issues facing the sector; and contribute functional input into the Sector Supplement development process. Workshops have been held in India and Portugal.
India
In November 2009 and the beginning of January 2010, key stakeholders were invited to join a Multi-Stakeholder Workshop on Sustainability Principles and Reporting for the construction and Real Estate Sector in the Indian Context which was held in Mumbai and in Bangalore. GRI, The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), Property Working Group, a global platform of financial institutions that collaborate to drive sustainable development to the heart of mainstream property finance, and Cognito, India's leading sustainability propagation advisory, were hosting the workshops.
Sustainability frameworks help instil uniformity in measurement and reporting across organizations, but to be realistic, efficient and balanced, the framework needs to factor in geographical nuances and ground realities of each country. The Indian workshops served as a platform for key stakeholders to articulate their view on sustainability in the context of the Indian construction and real estate sector and provided local perspective on reporting parameters. The participants sensitized GRI on the Indian context and provided input and ideas which will be recognized in the development of a Construction and Real Estate Sector Supplement.
Cognito India provides a workshop-website which covers background information, presentations, outcomes and perspectives, photos and more.
GRI and UNEP Finance Initiative Property Working Group collaborated on the first workshop which was held in Mumbai on the 18 November 2009. The second of the two workshops in India was held on 6 January 2010 in Bangalore in collaboration with UNEP SBCI.
Portugal
A multi-stakeholder workshop on Sustainability and the Construction and Real Estate in Portugal is being organized by Sustentare and sponsored by Multi Mall Management Portugal on 12 January 2010 in Lisbon, Portugal.
