About the project

Why produce a Sector Supplement for the Electric Utilities Sector?

The Electric Utilities Sector Supplement will enable companies in the energy utilities sector engaged in the generation and distribution of energy to better report on their sustainability performance using the GRI reporting framework.

Background

The final version of the GRI Electric Utility Sector Supplement has been in development since June 2006. A global, multi-stakeholder working group of expert practitioners has been working using a consensus-seeking approach on this Sector Supplement. The group includes representatives from the electric utility companies together with report information user groups such as civil society organizations, labor organizations, investors, and rating agencies.

Development process

The draft Sector Supplement was released in January 2007 for a public comment period of 90 days, during which time all interested parties were invited to submit their feedback on the draft.

Following the closure of the public comment period, the Electric Utilities Sector Supplement working group reviewed the 45 sets of comments received, and made changes to the draft finalized version of the Sector Supplement. The revised draft was then approved by the GRI Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to be released as a pilot version.

In 2008, the Electric Utilities Sector Supplement development process continued and a multi-stakeholder group of about 25-30 participants (equally divided between the industry and non-industry stakeholders with balanced constituency and geographic representation) was re-formed to participate in this process. The group was working primarily through teleconference calls and email exchanges, but there were also face-to-face meetings during the course of the process.

The work done in 2008 progressed the Sector Supplement from pilot version to a draft of the final version. From October 2008 to January 2009 a public comment period was open for the draft Sector Supplement, after which the working group reviewed the comments received and finalized the Sector Supplement.  The final Sector Supplement was submitted to the TAC and GRI Board of Directors before release as a final version.
