About the Project

Why produce a Sector Supplement for the Media Sector?

The media sector faces its own unique sustainability challenges, such as content issues, transparency and accountability, as well as eco-efficiency of materials used in the production of the circulated media, among others.

Background

A recently published study entitled “The Other Face of Liberty” which mapped the status of CSR in Latin American media companies concluded that there is a need for sustainability reporting guidance for the media sector. This study was developed by the Ibero-American New Journalism Foundation, the Avina Foundation and the Program for Journalism Studies of the Javeriana University with the support of Carolina Foundation.

In response to this recommendation, GRI, Ibero-American New Journalism Foundation, the Avina Foundation and the Program for Journalism Studies of the Javeriana University are currently investigating opportunities to develop sector specific reporting guidelines for the media sector which would be integrated into the G3 Guidelines.

Development process

Over a period of 2 years, GRI and its partners will work with media companies and their stakeholders to develop a set of reporting guidelines specifically for media companies. In line with GRI policy, the sector specific guidelines will be developed in a consensus seeking process involving a multi-stakeholder Working Group consisting of members from all parts of the world.

The development of the Sector Supplement will consist of four phases- Project Initiation, two consecutive Implementation Phases and the Project Output.  During project initiation, GRI engages with companies within the sector, finalizes the budget and recruits members for the Working Group.  The first implementation phase will include at least 3 Working Group meetings where Working Group members will identify material sector sustainability issues and draft indicators.  The findings will be submitted for a public survey.

The second Implementation phase will consist of 2 Working Group meetings during which feedback from the public survey will be reviewed, indicators from implementation phase 1 refined and indicator protocols drafted.  The indicators and indicator protocols will then be subjected to a Public Comment Period of 90 days, after which the final draft version of the Sector Supplement will be presented to the GRI Technical Advisory Committee and Board of Directors for approval.  Once it is approved the Project Output will be a Media Sector Supplement to be used by all media companies.
