About the Mining & Metals Sector Supplement
The Mining & Metals sector faces a high level of expectation from stakeholder groups with regards to transparency on its sustainability impacts. The aim of this GRI Supplement is to enhance sustainability reporting in the sector, in terms of the number of overall reporters but also in terms of bringing greater depth and comparability to the more experienced reporters.
The Supplement was designed to cover all main activities in the sector (exploration, mining and primary metal processing -including metal fabrication and recycling-) and the complete project life cycle (from development through operational lifetime to closure and post-closure). It consists of sector-specific sustainability reporting guidance which is integrated into the GRI G3 Guidelines.

Development process
The Mining & Metals Sector Supplement was developed in two phases with the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) as co-convener.
A pilot version phase ran from October 2003 through to February 2005. During this phase the multi-stakeholder Working Group developed a pilot Supplement for the sector, which contained a draft set of indicators. This version was developed in accordance with the GRI 2002 Guidelines.
In July 2008, a second multi-stakeholder Working Group was convened to finalize the Supplement. The Working Group reviewed the reporting experience with the pilot version and brought it up to date with the G3 Guidelines (2006), and developed indicator protocols.
Both phases included public consultations, where all interested sector experts were invited to submit their suggestions and comments on the drafts.
The final version of the Supplement was released in March 2010 and launched at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention.
Reporting with the Supplement will be required for GRI Application level A reporters published after 31 December 2011.
