About the project
Why produce a Sector Supplement for the Oil & Gas Sector?
The Oil & Gas sector is among those sectors facing the highest level of expectation from stakeholder groups with regards to transparency on its sustainability impacts. Thus, sustainability reporting has become an indispensable tool for Oil & Gas companies in order to secure and maintain their license to operate, and this is evident in the number of reporters within this sector.
Background
The Sector Supplement will help companies address the specific sustainability reporting issues, needs and challenges facing the Oil & Gas sector when using the GRI Reporting Framework.
Some examples of issues, needs and challenges that are likely to feature in the Oil & Gas Sector Supplement include:
- Greenhouse gas emissions
- Alternative / renewable energy investments
- Emergency preparedness and response
- Programs to assist developing countries to manage and invest fossil fuel revenues
- Implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative principles
The Oil & Gas Sector Supplement will be packaged so that it is fully integrated into the GRI G3 Guidelines.
Development process
A multi-stakeholder Working Group will periodically meet over the next two years and develop the content of the sector supplement.
The development process will also include consultations with a range of interested industry and non-industry stakeholders within the GRI network and exchanges with other relevant initiatives such as the project to update the IPIECA reporting guidance. Please let us know if you would like to take part in the development process through the Practitioners’ Network.
As a last step, the GRI Technical Advisory Committee and Board will need to approve the sector guidance before it is released as a Sector Supplement.
