Background
The GRI Telecommunications Sector Supplement was released in a pilot version in July 2003 as an attempt to provide sustainability reporting guidance to the telecom sector that is helpful to service providers and manufacturers alike. The pilot version of the supplement is available for use now.
Though some indicators of the Sector Supplement are more relevant to equipment manufacturers, others are better applicable to service providers. Since the telecommunication sector also interfaces with the wider information technology sectors, some of the indicators and commentaries may have application beyond the telecommunication companies.
Working Group and Strategic Partners
The Telecommunications Sector Supplement was developed through a working group with diverse global representation. Key industry and stakeholder groups that participated include, the African Institute of Corporate Citizenship, Cable and Wireless, British Telecommunications, Committee for Democracy in Information Technology, France Telecom, Sustainable Asset Management, Development Alternatives, Deutsche Telecom, Telecom Italia Lab, Triple Innova, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Union Network International, Vodafone, WWF Sweden, Amnesty International, Ericsson and Telstra Technologies.
Development was made possible by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), the European Commission’s Information Society and Media Directorate General and the later’s support of the NESKEY Road Map project.
Sector-specific Guidance
Sustainability opportunities and challenges for the telecommunications sector have been grouped into three categories - Internal Management, Providing Access, and Technology Applications – to address aspects of environmental, social and economic performance.
