Background
The pilot version of the GRI Tour Operators’ Sector Supplement was developed in 2002 through a multi-stakeholder working group convened by the United Nations Environment Programme’s Tour Operators Initiative (TOI) in partnership with Global Reporting Initiative. The pilot version of the supplement is available for use now.
This sector supplement applies only to businesses dedicated to organising holiday packages.
Working Group and Strategic Partners
The pilot version of the Supplement was developed through a multi stakeholder Working Group with industry and stakeholder representation from across the globe. The working group for the Tour Operators Sector Supplement comprised a diverse group of industry leaders and stakeholders including First Choice Holidays, City of Puerto Princesa, Cambia Tourism Concern, International Labour Organization, Viaggi del Ventaglio, Lloret de Mar, International Hotel & Restaurant Association, P&O Princess Cruises, Sudiosus Reisen, International Hotel Environment Initiative, Tearfund, Federazione Italiana Lavoratori Commercio Turismo Servizi, Hotelplan, Union International des Transports Routier, Dynamic Tours, British Airways Holidays, Accor Tours, Thomson Travel, LTU-Touristik GmbH, Tourist Board of Sri Lanka, British Airways, Travel Unie Nederland, Vasco Travel, Telefono Blu, SOS Turismo Consumatori, Scandinavian Leisure Group, Association of British Travel Agents, Aurinkomatkat-Suntours, Conservation International, Lions Dive & Beach Report, Six Continents/BASS, and the WWF UK.
Sector-specific Guidance
The Tour Operators Sector Supplement aims to capture the sustainability issues unique to tour operators, while recognizing the role of tour operators within the greater tourism industry.
The indicators have been grouped into five categories to address economic, sociala dn environmental performance: product management and development (PMD), internal management (IM), supply chain management (SCM), customer relations (CR), and co-operation with destination (D).
