XBRL (Extensible Business Reporting Language) is the emerging standard used around the world to define and exchange financial performance data. With substantial work already initiated internationally to create taxonomies for financial information, the GRI has, in collaboration with partners, developed an XBRL taxonomy for non-financial performance data that can complement other taxonomies.
This taxonomy helps fill a significant gap in the area of non-financial performance for organizations who wish to use of XBRL. This taxonomy will standardize the way that reported information can be exchanged, thereby enabling common exchange and communication of performance data.
