In 2002, GRI was formally inaugurated at the United Nations as a new global institution and a collaborating center of UNEP.
UNEP and GRI
UNEP’s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

GRI and UNEP have a long standing Memorandum of Understanding. UNEP leadership is represented in the GRI Governmental Advisory Group.

GRI collaborates intensively with UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, as well as with the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) in Paris including the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP/FI) in Geneva. Joint outputs include the GRI Financial Services Sector Supplement and the Carrots and Sticks report on regulation on sustainability reporting. In February 2011 GRI held a Side Event at the 26th Session of the UNEP Governing Council / Global Ministerial Forum: “Managing what you measure – Sustainability Reporting and Indicators to manage the change to a Green Economy”.
