GRI launches new guide to help companies succeed in their biodiversity reporting journeys

With the new IPBES Business and Biodiversity Assessment warning that ‘business as usual’ is accelerating nature loss and calling for transformative change in corporate behavior, GRI has launched a timely and practical new resource to help organizations step up and provide meaningful biodiversity reporting.

Decoding biodiversity impacts: A practical guide to corporate reporting with the GRI Standards is available now for free download. Combining expert insights on the use of the GRI 101 Biodiversity Standard, and signposting the resources and support available, it encompasses four case studies by GRI Community members, which illustrate:

  • How organizations can assess biodiversity impacts across operations and regions;
  • The benefits of integrating nature-related information into governance and decision-making;
  • The value of location-specific data in understanding biodiversity impacts and dependencies;
  • Assessing and responding to data collection challenges throughout supply chains.

At a time when biodiversity reporting is gaining increasing traction among businesses globally, the examples in the e-book demonstrate what credible, decision-useful disclosures can look like – and how assessing impacts on nature builds trust and informs actions that address related risks and opportunities.

As transparency expectations around biodiversity impacts intensify, the question isn't whether to report: it's how to do it credibly. We hope the perspectives and learnings in this e-book will demonstrate that, empowered by the GRI 101 Standard, effective and decision-useful corporate reporting on nature is achievable. Ultimately, this is about translating commitments into action that drives change and builds trust. Whether organizations are just starting out or already advanced in their nature disclosure practices, ‘Decoding biodiversity impacts’ is a key resource to strengthen reporting and navigate transparency requirements with greater clarity.

In effect for all GRI reporting from 1 January 2026, GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 sets the global benchmark for disclosing impacts on nature. The Standard, which has been published in 11 languages, updates and replaces GRI 304: Biodiversity 2016

The 12th plenary session of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) took place last week in Manchester, UK. On 9 February, IPBES published its Business and Biodiversity Assessment Report, which was approved by representatives of 150 governments. The report finds companies often bear little or no financial costs for their negative impacts on biodiversity, and puts forward 100 actions needed from companies, governments and other stakeholders.
