GRI in Africa

Launched in 2013 and based in Johannesburg, the hub promotes the importance of corporate accountability and transparency for markets and enhances the knowledge and uptake of sustainability reporting in the primary target markets of Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, South Africa, and other countries within the sub-Saharan Africa region.

The Hub is supported by an Advisory Group set up to provide strategic input with regards to program delivery, network development, and institutional sustainability. The Advisory Group members are drawn from business, academi, mediating institutions, and public policy representatives.

Who we work with

Responsible Business for Sustainable Development  

This program, funded by SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency)supports businesses to contribute to the SDGs.  We facilitate learning and sharing platforms throughout the region. This includes supporting UNCTAD’s Development Account initiatives in South Africa and Kenya, and collaborations with Africa Practice and Kenya Private Sector Alliance, events with PwC, Global Compact Networks and Enel, and developing ESG guidance and events on sustainability reporting for listed companies with the African Securities Exchange Association.  

Corporate Social Responsibility for Competitive Business  

With funding from SECO (Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs), we support the work to integrate SMEs from the region into global value chainsWorking with Frayintermedia and the Institute for Advancement of Journalism, we are also building the capacity of journalists to engage with sustainability dataIn collaboration with BATSETA Council of Retirement Funds of South Africa and Six Capitals Advisory, we are reaching out to the investor community, empowering them to integrate sustainability in their decision making.
