Extend your GRI Professional Certification with further learning

Why do I need a CEU course?

The right to use the title ‘GRI Certified Sustainability Professionals’ is regulated by GRI and imposes a duty on the bearer to maintain and enhance their professional competence. Therefore, all GRI Certified Sustainability Professionals should participate on a regular basis in activities that maintain or improve their professional competence.

The CEU (Continuing Education Unit) requirement helps to measure and monitor the efforts of the certified professional to do so. All training courses presented on this page award the learner between 1 and 3 CEU credits. On average, certified professionals need to collect 4 CEU credits per year to maintain their certified status.

Please note that all CEU courses can also be taken by sustainability professionals who do not hold a GRI Certification.

Frequently asked questions

If you obtained your GRI Certification or extended it after the 1st of November 2023, your GRI Certified Sustainability Professional status has a validity of 1 year. You can maintain your certified status by collecting 4 CEU credits every year. CEUs can be obtained by completing training courses at the GRI Academy. To confirm the extension of the certification period, GRI will issue certificates for all the professionals who maintain their GRI Certified Sustainability Professional status. Individuals can track their CEU progress in the GRI Academy.

The Academy offers CEU courses on specific GRI Standards, the sustainability reporting landscape and other reporting-related issues such as assurance. In addition, occasionally, attending an event organised by GRI will also award the attendee with a CEU credit. Check the GRI newsletter for such announcements.

If you do not complete your CEUs in time, your certification status will expire. This expiration will also be publicly visible in the GRI Certified Sustainability Professionals directory on the GRI website. To get reinstated, you must complete the missing CEUs and, depending on how long your certification has expired, you will have to pay a reinstatement fee or retake the certification exam.
