GRI Services: Making Sustainability Reporting Accessible to All!
16 November 2018

For GRI, sustainability reporting is not only an externally-driven exercise, it is a meaningful way for companies to best understand and manage their impacts, and to improve their business. As the practice continues to grow in importance, GRI is finding new ways to support companies in making the most of their reports, and of the information they contain.
The GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards (GRI Standards) provide a comprehensive, flexible and adaptable framework that companies of any size can use to report on their economic, environmental and social impact. But the task of reporting with them can seem daunting to relatively new reporters. From knowing what to report on, to figuring out how the data should be gathered, and how to present it, the journey is not always seen as straightforward.

With its Kick-off service, GRI helps organizations understand basic concepts that are key to the GRI Standards, and the principle-based approach that characterizes the reports. And it also helps organizations translate the concepts into clear actions to support their process.

Companies like the Swiss real estate manager and contractor Allreal-Gruppe have already started seeing the added value of this service, not only in terms of the report itself, but what it helps them achieve. And it helps them meet regulation in an easier way.

According to Matthias Meier, Head of Corporate Communications, “For Allreal the increasing significance of sustainability in both the business activity and the reporting is obvious and beyond a doubt. Our decision to work together in the field of sustainability reporting with GRI is due to the high acceptance as well as the flexible and logical structure of the organisation’s reporting standards. Based on the professional support from the initial contact until the instructive first workshop we look highly confidently toward the demanding and challenging process to our company’s first GRI sustainability report.”

GRI Services seek to cater to all levels of sustainability reporting experience. Those companies that have already written a report, and that want feedback on their reporting efforts from dedicated and specialized GRI staff, can avail themselves of GRI’s Review Service, with specific suggestions for improvement to increase the quality and consistency of their sustainability report. GRI staff comments on areas such as the usability of the report, how the report measures against peers in the same industry, and how it performs in applying the principles of defining report quality as well as content and the management approach disclosures. Further, it can include more information on engaging with stakeholders and other relevant topics.
